"Writing the book on sketching", January (i.e. Outlines of a system of surveying : for geographical and military purposes ... (London : Samuel Leigh, 1827)?). Meets Under-Secretary Hay at the Colonial Office, 13 January, "who proposed 3 difft. situations at New S. Wales worth £500 a year each - a collector, Civil Engineer, & a second or assistant to W. Oxley with the reversion of his appt.". Calls on Hay, 29 January, who informs him that he "should be appointed assistant surveyor to succeed W. Oxley [in] New South Wales". Arrival in Sydney, 27 September. Meets Governor Darling and Surveyor-General John Oxley, 28 September. Diary after 13 October is incomplete. Includes trips to Campbelltown, Liverpool, Parramatta; Blue Mountains, 8-22 November (no further details provided). Includes a series of entries recording the births of four children (Murray, Emily, Campbell, "Another" [Thomas]), 1828-1833, at the end of the diary.
