Rowland Hassall fled Tahiti for Sydney aboard the 'Nautilus' in 1798, along with his wife Elizabeth and sons Thomas, Samuel, and Jonathan. On their arrival at Port Jackson the family first lived at Parramatta in a house owned by lay preacher George Barrington, a reformed pickpocket.
