Administrative / Biographical history

A. E. S. Ironside was the first Australian-born artist to study abroad. She studied frescoes in the Papal collection in Rome and sold paintings to W. C. Wentworth and the Prince of Wales. In 1862 she exhibited paintings in the Great Exhibition. John Ruskin was her teacher. She died of tuberculosis in Rome in 1867
