Jack Fingleton was born in Sydney in 1908. He was educated at Waverley Christian Brothers College and played cricket for Waverley Club. A right hand opening batsman, he played 18 tests for Australia from 1932 to 1938, scoring five centuries. In 1942 he married Phillipa Street, daughter of Sir Kenneth Street, Chief Justice of NSW.
