Transferred from the Australian Museum in 1935. After it was sent to the Admiralty, the journal was appropriated by Sir Philip Stephens, Secretary to the Admiralty. It seems to have come into the possession of Lord Ranelagh whose son sold it in 1885 to F.W. Cosens of Lewes. In 1890 Cosens sold it to John Corner. In 1895 F.H. Dangar bought it from C...

Lieutenant James Cook was commissioned to command the bark Endeavour on 25 May 1768. He took charge on 27 May when his journal commences. The ship left England on 26 August 1768, and, sailing via Cape Horn, arrived at Matavai Bay, Tahiti, on 13 April 1769.
