The watercolour shows Port Jackson looking west from Vaucluse. The view encompasses Rose Bay Lodge (built in 1834 by John Verge),Henrietta Villa (built 1816-1822 and demolished by 1856) and Henrietta stables at Point Piper as well as Garden Island and Sydney Harbour to the North Shore. A group of women stand in the distance overlooking the view.

Signature / Inscriptions
Inscribed "Port Jackson with the town of Sydney N.S.W." in lower left. Inscribed "The Waratah" in lower left, referring to that flower which appears in the image immediately above the word. It is inscribed on the back "From Woorianda. 30 Septbr '53"
Attributions / Conjectures
This work is unsigned. It was possibly painted by a student of John Skinner Prout. Skinner Prout came to Sydney in December 1840. During this time he lectured and privately instructed in art. In 1844 he moved to Hobart before returning to England in 1848.

Slight loss to the surface of the paper along the top right and damage to lower left edges of sheet from previous mounting; pencilled numbering "A/61" on top right.
The centre join in the picture indicates the sketch was possibly originally extracted from a sketchbook.
