This warrant is addressed to Thomas Capon, Chief Constable of Van Diemen's Land and to all other constables, authorising them to apprehend Routley on a charge of assaulting one John Hunt and stealing five Spanish Dollars from him. It is signed by Josiah Spode, Assistant Police Magistrate for Hobart.

Charles Routley, a runaway convict, was active as a bushranger in the Bagdad Hills of Tasmania in the 1820s. In 1830 he was sentenced to death for sewing up one of his companions in a bullock's skin and roasting him over a fire. He later confessed to six other murders.
