The modernists in Sydney and Melbourne formed small supportive groups to advance their theories. Many such as Grace Crowley, were influential teachers. A sense of nationalism, a logical off - shoot of war, gave rise to the Kelly series by Nolan and to the inland landscapes of Drysdale.
