Showing the position of 4th and 12th Regiments, 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade 5000 metres south-east of Beersheba.

Lieut. Abbott and Massie (12th Light Horse Regiment) were part of the cavalry charge at Beersheba.

To take the oasis of Beersheba was essential for access to dwindling water supplies; the Light Horse were not Cavalry, but Mounted Infantry without sabres or lances; they were issued with swords and trained in cavalry tactics only in August 1918....
