Church rates. A return from each parish within the several archdeaconries in England and Wales, setting forth the gross amount expended during the last seven years for church purposes, stating the amount of any extraordinary expenditure within the seven years materially affecting the average; also, the amount expended--1st. On the repair and maintenance of the fabric of the church and churchyard; 2d. For the celebration of divine worship; 3d. For other purposes: also, how much of the above gross amount was raised by church rates; how much from special endowments, and how much from voluntary rates or subscriptions; stating also, what is the present state of repair of the church and churchyard; the amount on which the parish is rated to the relief of the poor; whether the property of the parish is much subdivided, or chiefly in the hands of a few proprietors; whether the landowners generally are churchmen or dissenters; whether the church, if a mother church, derives any portion of its rates from subordinate districts having churches of their own to maintain, and, if so, to what extent; whether, if it be a district church, it is liable to rates for the mother church in addition to its own, and, if so, to what extent; and, whether the parish is under the operation of the Small Tenements Act, 13 & 14 Vict. c. 99: also, a copy of the circular letter from the Secretary of State for the Home Department, addressed to the several archdeacons, and dated 6th September 1858.
