Prisoners (corporal punishment). Return to an address of the Honourable the House of Commons, dated 31 July 1870;--for, "Returns of the number of prisoners punished since the 14th day of April 1871, under the Act 26 & 27 Vict. c. 44, by whipping; the place of punishment, and the number of strokes ordered and inflicted in each case, and by what instrument, and by sentence of what presiding or other judge, at what assizes or other court, and the age of each prisoner so punished:" "Of all cases in each Gaol and House of Correction in the United Kingdom in which corporal punishment has been inflicted by orders or sentence of the visiting justices, or by courts of assize and quarterly sessions, since the said 14th day of April 1871 to the present time and of the names of the visiting justices or presidirg judge, in each case, by whose orders any corporal punishment has been inflicted in each Gaol and House of Correction; specifying the offence for which such punishment was given, and the number of lashes, and how and by what instrument applied ; the age and name of each person punished; the date of each warrant or order; and the names of' the justices, surgeons, and other persons present when the punishment was inflicted:" "And, of all cases in each Gaol or House of Correction in England and Wales, and in Ireland, in which corporall punishment has been inflicted by whipping, under the authority of the Act, 10 & 11 Vict. c. 82, of the Act 13 & 14 Vict. c. 37, and of the Acts 24 & 25 Vict. c. 96, 24 & 25 Vict. c. 100. and 25 & 26 Vict. c. 18, any or either of them, or any other act or acts, and the age of each person punished, from the said 14th day of April 1871 to the present time; specifying the particular offences for which, and the names of the justices by or before whom, each of them had been summarily convicted and sentenced; the dates of each conviction and punishment; the number of lashes in each case, and by what instrument, and the names of the persons present when the punishment was inflicted."
