Summary
In 1830 an operation was a rarity, and the repertoire of a surgeon was extremely limited. Progress in surgery depended on three things. Anaesthesia, the avoidance of infection and the introduction of blood transfusion. By the end of the Second World War these things had been introduced and many areas of surgery became safe.
