The source of Friend's 'The Arrest of Governor Bligh' is the iconic early colonial watercolour '[The arrest of Governor Bligh, 1808]' (Call no: Safe 4 / 5). This painting is attributed to an unknown artist commissioned by Sergeant Thomas Whittle, a N.S.W. Corps soldier involved in Bligh's arrest. The watercolour's provenance is through the family...

The painting's provenance is unknown prior to its first recorded entry onto the auction market though Christies, Sydney, in 1974. Since this time the painting was bought and sold 5 times before it was acquired by the Library in 2015.
