Edward Gilks, sketcher, lithographer and draughtsman was born in London c. 1822. After serving a seven year apprenticeship with Threadneedle Street lithographer Thomas Dean, he worked in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood engraver, and from 1850 on his own account.
