James Alexander Hogue (1846-1920), journalist and parliamentarian, was born at Clarence Town, NSW, son of Fitzarthur and Elizabeth Hogue. He was educated at Newcastle Grammar School and trained as a compositor with the Newcastle Chronicle before joining the Maitland Mercury as a reporter in 1873.
