Joy Lewis graduated as a speech therapist in 1939 at the age of 22. Initially run by the Hospitals Commission, the course was taken over by the Department of Education. She was secretary of the Australian College of Speech Therapists for several years and worked in speech clinics at various suburban public schools from 1944 to 1946.
