Administrative / Biographical history

George Henry Iles was born in England in 1883. He joined the Royal Navy in 1912 as a ship’s cook. He was on loan from the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Navy, from 1912 to 1921, served as Ship’s Cook on HMAS Melbourne throughout the war and was was promoted to Chief Petty Officer Cook in the Royal Navy in 1920
