Contextual Information

Administrative / Biographical history

The Sheffield steelmaking firm of Vickers Sons & Co. was incorporated in 1867. Under the chairmanship of Thomas E. Vickers (1833-1915) it became famous for engineering, armaments & aircraft manufacture and shipbuilding. In 1933, Cockatoo Island in Sydney was leased to to the Cockatoo Docks & Engineering Co. Pty. Ltd., a subsidiary of Vickers.
