John Dillon departed from Sydney on the ‘Otranto’ on 21 April 1951 bound for London. Over the next 18 months he travelled around the British Isles, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, hitch-hiking and staying in Youth Hostels.
