Lambert had met Major General Sir Granville Ryrie in 1918, while serving as an official war artist in Palestine during the First World War. Following his return to Australia in 1921, he first visited the Ryrie property Micalago, near Canberra, in January 1922, and became a regular visitor there over the following years.
