Ormond Tunks was educated at Fort Street Boys' High School and the University of Sydney. In 1911, aged 16, he was one of a group of Fort Street Boys' High School cadets who were members of the Australian Commonwealth Coronation Contingent of New South Wales Cadets attending the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary.
