Lachlan Macquarie, 1762-1824, was born on Ulva in the Scottish Hebrides. He joined the British Army in 1776 and served in Canada, America and Jamaica. From 1787 to 1807 he served in India rising to the command of the 73rd regiment. He married Elizabeth Henrietta Campbell in 1807 and a son, Lachlan, was born seven years later.
