Thomas Keneally was born in 1935 in Sydney. He trained for the Catholic priesthood but withdrew in 1960 before ordination. He worked as a schoolteacher before the publication of his first novel, The Place at Whitton, in 1964. Since then he has been a prolific full time writer.
