Arthur James Vogan joined the 'Bonito' expedition to British New Guinea for the Royal Geographical Society (Australasia), 1885. In 1886 his illustrated account of the eruption of Tarawera, New Zealand earned his appointment as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News.
