Wlliam Wilkinson Wardell, architect and engineer, was born in London in 1823. Wardell was strongly influenced by the Gothic revival in architecture. This interest was fostered by Augustus Pugin and John Henry Newman, later Cardinal Newman, who further encouraged Wardell to convert to Roman Catholicism.
