Typed transcript of the journal that Anna Josepha King kept on the voyage from London to Sydney in 1799-1800. Anna describes the voyage, commenting on the weather and events on the ship, including her husband's health and the behaviour of the women convicts.

A manuscript transcription made by P.N. Lethbridge in 1897, is located at C 185/2. Another manuscript transcription, in an unknown hand, is included in the King family papers located at MLMSS 1973X (microfilm CY 2253).

Administrative / Biographical history

Anna Josepha King (1765-1844) married Philip Gidley King in 1791 and went with him to Norfolk Island, returning to England in 1796. In 1799 King was appointed lieutenant-governor of New South Wales and they sailed to Sydney with their youngest child Elizabeth on the 'Speedy', captained by George Quested.
