Administrative / Biographical history

Alexander Dalrymple, 1737-1808, hydrographer, born in Scotland, entered the service of the East India Company in 1752 and became hydrographer to the company in 1779. Dalrymple published numerous charts as well as works on the geographic discoveries in the Pacific Ocean. He was appointed hydrographer to the Admiralty in 1795
