Contextual Information

Administrative / Biographical history

The Great Synagogue, Sydney, was designed by Thomas Rowe, a leading Sydney architect, and opened in 1878. It replaced two previous Jewish Synagogues, at York Street (1844) and Macquarie Street (1859). These in turn had been preceded by Sydney's first Synagogue, at Bridge Street (1837).
