The governors of New South Wales regularly forwarded despatches to the British Government giving detailed reports on all matters of major and minor importance. Duplicates and triplicates of all despatches were forwarded and they were handwritten either by the Governor himself, his secretary or a clerk. Many despatches also contained enclosures.
