The ledger and letters contain accounts, correspondence, memoranda, messages, and some miscellaneous literary extracts, in the handwriting of John Hunter Baillie and was written at the time that Baillie was managing Dr John Dunmore Lang’s affairs.

Administrative / Biographical history
John Hunter Baillie (1818–1854), was a Scots Presbyterian churchman and banker, born in Hamilton, Scotland who emigrated to New South Wales in 1841.
Through Dr John Dunmore Lang, Hunter Baillie secured a job as sub-editor of the Colonial Observer, and was appointed to manage Dr Lang's business and financial affairs in his absence.
