Sir James John Joynton Smith (1858-1943), hotelier, racecourse and newspaper owner, was born on 4 October 1858 at Bishopsgate, London. About 1890 Smith came to Sydney where he managed various hotels in the Sydney area. A keen sportsman, he invested in racecourses and other sporting events.
