Date note

Most photographs are not dated. Collection dated from opening of Albert & Son shopfront in King St, Sydney (1902) and last dated architectural plan (1945), also the year of John Garnett's death.

Object History

The donors, Mrs Crago and her sister Mrs F. Smith, were the grand-daughters of John Garnett, whose daughter was their mother.

According to information provided to Mitchell Library's Field Librarian by the donors, John Garnett arrived from England in 1883 to work as a stonemason at Prospect, NSW. He worked as a practising stonemason or as a supervisor in Sydney, various NSW country towns, and Canberra, until his death in 1945. His work included the chapel at King's School,...
