One of those photographed is the grandmother of the original owner, as "Granma" is written on the verso. Advertising for the hotel appears on some of its walls, doors and windows.

The Ocean Wave Hotel in the Rocks began life as Simeon Lord’s Black Dog Inn in 1829 on the corner of Gloucester Street and Black Bear Lane (later Little Essex St). The name was changed in 1888 from when it had a strong history of female ownership with the licensees Rose Symonds (1889-1891); Sarah Vogt (1895); and Margaret Hayes (Dec. 1898-1899). Sa...
