Phillip Parker King was born in 1791, the son of Philip Gidley King, 3rd governor of NSW. He entered the navy in 1807 and was promoted lieutenant in 1814. From 1817 to 1821 he conducted a survey of the Australian coast. By 1824 he was considered to be one of Britain's leading hydrographers and in that year was made a fellow of the Royal society. I...
