According to the donor, the photographs were presented to her grandfather John William Dunlop, a schoolteacher, when he was leaving Cudgegong ca.1902. The donor's mother, Mrs Jean Williams, stated that her father became a lecturer in art at Teachers' College in 1907, went to Europe on a scholarship in 1912 and was later an Inspector of Schools.
