PW was first named The Publishers' and Stationers' Weekly Trade Circular when it appeared Jan 18, 1872. The name changed to Publisher's Weekly in 1877. Books were set by hand then, but one factor, book discounting was already a practice. By 1872 book prices were rising from 50 cents to 75 cents.
