The Tate Gallery exhibition 'Francis Bacon: Works on Paper' reveals that the artist may have been untruthful when he declared that sketches were not part of his spontaneous working method. As the exhibit shows, Bacon did make preliminary sketches and downplayed their importance to protect his image.
