In Australia, new figures reveal that private health insurance funds made record profits of almost half a billion dollars in the financial year 1999-2000. The most recent Health Expenditure Bulletin by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that fund surpluses almost tripled from $167 million in 1998 to $490 million in 2000.
