SCHAFFER, John W. 86, of Clearwater, passed away on Monday, June 14, 2010 at Sylvan Health Center, Clearwater. John was born in Chicago, IL and came to Clearwater in 1989 from Huntsville, AL. Following graduation from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechancal Engineering in 1948, John joined GTE Automatic Electric in Chicago. During his college years, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served 21 months in flight training and 9 months as a P-38 reconnaissance pilot in Europe where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 5 Air Medals and several European Theatre ribbons. John was transferred from the Chicago area in 1967 to Huntsville where he was responsible for the design, construction, equipping and operation of an 860,000 square foot manufacturing plant with 4000 employees. In 1967 he was named General Manager and by action of the Board of Directors he was named Vice President & General Manager in 1968. Active in the community, he served on the Board of Directors of 3 consecutive banks for 17 years, 15 years as Chairman of the Audit committee. John was a board member of the School of Business Advisory Council of Alabama A. & M. University, a member of the Executive Board of the Tennessee Valley Boy Scouts of America, a board member of the Industrial Development Association and on the Advisory Committee of the Mental Health Center. John was also a Vice President and on the executive board of the Chamber of Commerce, a board member of the American Cancer Society as well as President of the United Way. He served on the Mayor's Community Advisory Committee and was President of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. He served as a member of the executive board of Huntsville Area Companies as well as a board member of the Rotary Club and the American Red Cross. His wife, [Mary L. Williams] is a native of the Chicago area and they have two daughters and a son; Ann Eckmann of Libertyville, IL., Dr. Linda Schaffer-Collins of Boise, ID and John G. Schaffer of Longwood, FL along with eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, Safety Harbor, where he was a member. Friends are calling on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Moss Feaster Funeral Home, Largo. Funeral Services will be Thursday, June 24th at 10:30 am at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church. CLARK, George Dennison age 85, of Largo, passed away May 14, 2010, in McKinney, TX, peacefully with his family by his side. He was born and raised in Wakefield, RI.
