A follow-up study involving veterans with type 2 diabetes at high risk for cardiovascular disease showed no legacy effect after 5.6 years of intensive glucose lowering. The risk of major cardiovascular events was not reduced over a 13.6-year period, and a mortality benefit or improvement in quality of life over 15 years was not seen.
