Hans Bandler (1914-2009) was born in Vienna, Austria, to Elsa Blumenthal and Ludwig Bandler, but was largely raised by his aunt, Fritzi Blumenthal. He qualified as a mechanical engineer, but in 1938, after the Germans took over the company for which he worked, Bandler lost his job.
