Mary, 88 living in poverty, in her kitchen, Pyrmont, 1992. The photographer took the lid off a saucepan to reveal about a hundred baby cockroaches'. As a child her parents died and she was taken into care by the Catholic Church, where she stayed until aged 21. She fell pregnant and the child was taken into care. She was a tap dancer at the Tivoli. She never recovered emotionally and lives on her own as an invalid pensioner. In her thirties she married a solder who was killed during the war. She tried to find her son but he died just before they met.
