George Thorne (1810-1891) was a member of the committee which established the Royal Exchange of Sydney, serving as Director and then Chairman. His house 'Claremont', which he built on land which was originally part of the Wentworth Estate at Rose Bay, later became the Convent of the Sacred Heart.
