Marine biologist and oceanographer. Born in Canada, Murray was educated in Edinburgh. He was naturalist in charge of collections on the Challenger expedition of 1872-75 which explored the world's great ocean basins. He financed scientific expeditions to Christmas Island and advocated the exploration of Antarctica
