General note

Volume 2 came from the Papers of Rev. William Branwhite Clarke.
The drawings in Vol. 2 pages 25-33 were originally loose and have been inserted into the volume.
Stylistically, many of the drawings are copies of Conrad Martens' works.

Signature / Inscriptions

Some of the drawings are initialled, "M.J.S.", and some are signed "M.J. Scott"
One drawing is initialled, "H.B".
Several drawings are inscribed with, "by Mrs D.C.F. Scott" in a later hand.
Most drawings are titled.
"Sketches by M.J.S." is embossed on front of Volume 2

Administrative / Biographical history

Maria Jane Barney married David Charles Frederick Scott in 1838. Initially they lived at the Barney's home, Fort Macquarie, ("the dear Fort" as Maria described it) then moved to Newcastle. In 1839 D.C.F. Scott took up land at Bengalla near Muswellbrook to breed Walers for the horse trade and grapes for wine. The property was sold after the Bank of...
