Alphanumeric designations
Many of the photographs have Woolnough's number on the reverse in pencil but there was no key supplied with the photographic collection. There is possibly a key in the mansucript component of the collection at MLMSS 491/7-12

Walter George Woolnough was "temporary" adviser to the Commonwealth Government from 1927 to 1941. After visiting North American and Argentinian oilfields in 1930, he encouraged the use of aerial surveys and aerial photos in the search for oil, which he believed would be found in commercial quantities in Australia and New Guinea.
