Objects - 9.6 x 7.3 cm. (portrait) ; 16 x 14.3 x 3 cm. (frame) - 1 white on blue jasper ware medallion, dipped darker blue, with two holes on the back, housed in deeply set oval shaped gilt wooden frame with glass front, gilt inner rim and wooden mount, and ring on back for hanging

General note

The portrait of Sir Joseph Banks was first modelled by John Flaxman Jnr. between 1775-1779. It is difficult to assign specific dates to the medallions as several issues were made over a period of time.
The portrait is cracked from the neck down.
The medallion is similar to one held in the Dixson Galleries collection (DL Pa 100) and several in...

Signature / Inscriptions

"Wedgwood" impressed on back.
Titled and dated from ink inscription on paper label affixed to back of medallion, "Joseph Banks Baronet 1781 / by Flaxman in 1775".
"date / 1777/1795 / 12140" in ink on reverse of medallion.
Etched on back of wooden frame three times then written over in ink, "IX"
