This image is a preliminary sketch for 'The charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba, 31 October 1917'. Lambert began this work in 1918, and completed the painting in 1920. The painting depicts the Australian Light Horsemen dismounting, and from the side rather than face on.

George Washington Lambert (1873-1930), artist, was born on 13 September 1873 at St Petersburg. He migrated with his family on 20 January 1887, soon went to Eurobla, near Warren, a sheep-station owned by his great-uncle Robert Firth.
