Administrative / Biographical history

In 1872 HMS Challenger began a 3 1/2 years voyage of marine exploration, including a physical and biological survey of the oceans of the world. She was commanded by Capt. G.S. Nares and the Director of the scientific staff was Professor Sir Charles Wyville Thomson. Results of the voyage were published by John Murray.
