Diary begins at Queen Charlotte Valley near the Lachlan River and breaks off where the party had to leave the river because of impassable marshes and head towards the coast. Describes in detail geographical features of the country passed through and assesses its future potential as farming land.

John Oxley was Surveyor-General of New South Wales, 1812-1828. He was appointed by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1817 to lead an expedition to trace the course of the Lachlan River.
